Kindergartners Learn to Fill Buckets with Big Hearts!

They took an exciting trip to the Mayo Performing Arts Center to see Have You Filled a Bucket Today? The Musical! The show is centered around the concept of "filling one's bucket" with acts of kindness and positive actions.

The play resonated with our kindergarteners, as they have read several books in class with the same motif including, Have You Filled Your Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids by Carol McCloud and How Full is Your Bucket? by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer. These lessons on filling one’s bucket emphasize the importance of compassion, friendship, and the joy of giving.

Back in the classroom, kindergarten students remained inspired by the show and their books and were eager to put their newfound knowledge into action. They first shared personal examples of times when friends, family, and even pets filled their bucket. After sharing their stories, students took some time to write down their favorite examples and wrote them on paper water droplets to be stapled to the big empty bucket that was hanging from the bulletin board. Before they knew it, the bucket was overflowing with the kind things that students wrote down including things as simple as a smile or sharing a treat with a friend.

“Sharing stories from our own experiences allows the lessons that students learn to really resonate with them. Activities like this foster meaningful connections and also reinforce the importance of empathy, compassion, and the power of positivity,” says Kindergarten Homeroom Teacher Maribel Mohr.
