Eighth-Graders, Kindergarteners Take Virtual Field Trips
One of the silver linings of distance learning is how technology can connect us in unique ways.
That could not be more true as several grades embarked on virtual field trips this week. The eighth grade participated in a virtual escape room—sharpening their problem-solving skills, collaborating virtually, and connecting with each other during a time when many can feel isolated.
Students started out together in one Zoom room but then were divided into breakout rooms. A gamemaster shared their screen and showed the group pictures and videos based on what ideas the group had on how to escape the room.
“It was great to see my classmates and work together to solve the escape room,” said eighth-grader Alexis Bartoli. “We miss each other, but this was a great way to come together as a class and remember that together we can get through anything.”
At the other end of the spectrum, our youngest learners traveled to a place they never would have been able to visit in person: the Toucan Rescue Ranch in Costa Rica. Students were taken on the tour of the facility and its rehabilitation areas and enjoyed seeing parrots, macaws, owls, sloths, and spider monkeys in action.
The kindergarten is beginning its annual study of the rainforest, so the field trip gave students a chance to immerse themselves in the ecosystem and the lives of many of the animals that live there.
“I cannot imagine a more perfectly timed field trip,” said Niki Robbins, parent of Wyatt ‘28 and Bennett ‘25. “Moments like today are so exciting for the kids and such an incredible, memorable way to stay learning. We went all the way to the rainforest in Costa Rica for lunch and we were back in time for the closing circle!”
