Four Peck Students Attend the Fourth Annual Middle School Equity & Inclusion Summit
On October 21 (a Saturday!) four Peck Upper Schoolers found inspiration and meaningful connections at the fourth annual Middle School Equity & Inclusion Summit hosted by Gill St. Bernard’s.
Christopher B. ‘24, Declan G. ‘24, Jonah B. ‘25, and Bennet S. ‘25 were all in attendance for a day filled with group discussions and presentations under this year’s theme of Creating Space for Authentic Voices at the Intersection of Technology, Culture, & Identity.
This year’s keynote speaker was the Head of Technology and Innovation at Atlanta International School Dr. Marsha Maxwell, an accomplished STEM expert and a specialist in exploring and creating meaningful AI and VR learning experiences. In her presentation, Maxwell encouraged students to use online platforms in a way that considered the greater community–for example not sharing content that could be harmful or false.
“The summit gives seventh and eighth graders an opportunity to join students from peer schools to learn more about diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and community,” says Peck’s Director of Community Connections & Belonging Cymone Williamson. “The conversations and break-out groups were student-led which provided a comfortable space for students to share multiple viewpoints and opinions which lead to robust conversations and learning.”
At the conclusion of this summit, our students left with new ideas on fostering inclusivity and using their leadership skills to contribute to a positive school environment.
