Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at The Peck School
Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 to October 15, coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of many Latin American nations. This month is a time for students across the United States to come together and honor the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities. At The Peck School, students and teachers are finding many ways to engage with and celebrate Hispanic culture.
Latin music at drop-off: Students danced their way through morning handshakes on their way to class with a Latin music playlist.
Cultural dances in music class: Lower School students are learning folk dances from Hispanic countries, like Los Machetes, Las Chiapanecas, and Jarabe Tapatío (the Mexican Hat Dance), all paying homage to Mexico.
World Cultures lunches: Two separate lunch menus were prepared by our very own Chef Joe! Students expanded their palates with a Cuban-inspired Mojo Chicken and Bolivian-inspired Picante de Pollo. Students and teachers enjoy a few World Cultures lunches each month, as the Peck community acknowledges a diverse range of heritage and cultural celebrations throughout the year.
Student Reflections: From all grade levels, students with Hispanic backgrounds shared their love of their heritage during an All-School Assembly, teaching the community more about Hispanic Heritage Month.
“Being Latina is something that I am very proud of. For me, it is a strong connection between family, love, and celebrating our culture everyday,” said fourth-grader Milani Stella Rivera. “It shapes who I am and I would not change it for anything.”
Learning about Hispanic heritage isn't just an educational journey, it's a celebration of diversity and inclusion. This month-long celebration is an opportunity for students to learn, reflect, and appreciate the vibrant tapestry of traditions that make up Hispanic heritage.
