AI at The Peck School: Navigating Innovation with Integrity

As technology evolves, Peck thoughtfully explores how emerging tools, including artificial intelligence, can strengthen teaching and learning while preserving the thinking, productive struggle, and human connection at the heart of a Peck education.

Rooted in our mission and guiding principle of Consideration of Others, our approach begins with the qualities we have always sought to develop in students: curiosity, creativity, sound judgment, integrity, adaptability, and care for others.

Teachers determine when and how AI supports a clear learning objective. Unless explicitly permitted, students work independently. When used, AI serves as an assistant, not an author, within school-approved, teacher-guided environments.

AI never replaces original thinking, productive struggle, teacher feedback, or human connection. Through this thoughtful, age-appropriate approach, students learn to think critically, act responsibly, and navigate an evolving future with confidence.

A Thoughtful Process, From Strategy to Practice

Since 2023, Peck has undertaken a deliberate process to understand the opportunities, responsibilities, and implications of artificial intelligence. This work was supported by a layered governance structure that combined Board of Trustee-level stewardship and strategic oversight with the educational and operational expertise of a schoolwide AI Task Force.

Five Core Principles Guiding Our Approach to AI

To guide our community, our strategic approach to AI is anchored by five core principles:

A blue line drawing of a small sprout with two leaves grows from a flat line against a plain white background.
Grounded in our Mission
We approach AI through the lens of our enduring mission, ensuring every decision strengthens academic rigor, character development, and student agency.
Focused on Student Outcomes
We prepare students to thrive in a world shaped by AI by developing their judgment to think critically, their character to act responsibly, and their adaptability to navigate the future.
Anchored by Educators
We continue to invest in our exceptional faculty, ensuring teachers remain skilled, present, and deeply human while thoughtfully integrating technologies that allow for meaningful, authentic work with students.
Built on Meaningful Interactions
We explore opportunities to leverage AI to support operational effectiveness, creating greater capacity for faculty and staff to focus on the student-centered interactions that define a Peck education.

Always Adapting
We maintain the systems needed to monitor and evaluate a rapidly evolving landscape, adapting thoughtfully while remaining grounded in our defining strengths.

Building AI Literacy & Ethics: A Developmental Journey

Across the K–8 journey, students build an age-appropriate understanding of how artificial intelligence works, how to use it appropriately, and how it can affect people and society.

They learn that AI systems are created by humans, learn from data, and can produce incomplete, inaccurate, or biased information. As students grow, they develop the technical understanding, ethical judgment, and discernment to evaluate AI-generated information and engage with emerging technologies with increasing independence.
