Celebrating the Festival of Lights! Happy Diwali!
On Nov. 5, we celebrated and learned about Diwali!
Diwali is one of the most important and auspicious holidays and falls on the fifteenth day of the Hindu Kartic Month. The festival of lights represents peace and joy, the triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness. People clean their homes and decorate every area with lights, lamps, diyas, flowers, rangoli, and candles during this holiday.
The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word "deepavali" which means "rows of lighted lamps." Many households across India celebrate by decorating their homes with diyas, or small oil lamps, and other colorful lights. The importance of these lights is related to one of the origin myths of Diwali: the narrative of Lord Rama and his wife Sita, who after defeating evil king Ravana, traversed a trail of diya lighted by the villagers of their homeland.
To celebrate, we learned about the history and traditions of Diwali in our classrooms, including in the kindergarten, where students learned about and made their own rangoli. To all those celebrating Diwali this year, we wish you happiness, prosperity, and joy to you and all your family.
