Peck Eighth Graders Crack The Code in Nationwide STEM Challenge for Girls
Earlier this month, Peck eighth-graders Scarlette Liftin and Harini Venkatesh participated in Foxcroft School’s 10th Annual STEM Challenge, the theme of which was “Code for Good.”
Along with more than 75 middle school students around the country, Liftin and Venkatesh completed daily challenges and a culminating virtual event that tested their coding skills and cybersecurity knowledge.
“The Foxcroft STEM Challenge was a great experience,” said Liftin. “It was very exciting to work with other girls who love STEM problem-solving as much as I do.”
Each day during the weeklong competition, participants invited submitted answers to different theme-related questions, puzzles and trivia. On the final day, students attended an interactive virtual session led by engineers from event sponsor Stryker Corporation, featuring challenges, prizes, and a career panel. Competitors were randomly organized into breakout groups to complete the day’s coding exercises, and Liftin and her team won third place in the competition.
"I was really grateful to have participated in such a thoughtful STEM experience for girls," said Venkatesh. "Through the trivia contests and activities during the week, I learned so much about things like programming, cryptography, and women in computing. The final activity on Saturday was a wonderful way to meet students from other schools and participate in a fun problem-solving activity."
Foxcroft School is a girls’ boarding and day school in Middleburg, Virginia that is known for its award-winning computer science program.
