Emphasizing Math in Grades K-4

Part 1 of The Peck School's 2015 Strategic Plan, Innovative and Inspirational Learning, charged the school to heighten the emphasis on the Lower School math program, and hire a math specialist to focus specifically on elementary-level curricula and best practices to the Lower School math program.

That goal came to fruition in 2016 with several initiatives that heighted the math experience for Grades K-4. The school hired Lower School Math Coordinator Jennifer Hogan, outfitted math classrooms with flexible furniture, and created two dedicated math spaces in the Eckert-Huff building.

Peck's flexible Guided Math approach in the Lower School teaches students to "think like mathematicians," encouraging individual aptitudes as well as ingraining an excitement and confidence for math.

Guided Math in Action

Ms. Hogan knows that not every student acquires math skills at the same pace. For this reason, she and our master homeroom teachers ensure students each progress at their own individual level through our Guided Math approach. Students focus on building number sense, explore the “why” in every problem, and use “math talk” to explain their thinking and defend their reasoning; all helping them think more deeply as mathematicians. Ms. Hogan holds bachelors’ degrees in Elementary Education and Math & Computer Science from Boston College, and a master’s degree in Urban Education from Simmons College.
