The hundredth day of school is quickly approaching, and you know what that means… Third Grade’s annual Project Runway show is just around the corner! A beloved tradition at The Peck School, this event gives third graders the chance to design, create, and model their own outfits—each featuring 100 of something!
From donuts to basketballs to even Taylor Swifts, creativity knows no bounds, and third graders have just submitted their costume descriptions for 2025! But where do these wild and wonderful ideas come from? It all starts with a special homework assignment that guides students through a three-step design process:
Design: Students brainstorm an outfit that showcases a collection of 100 items—keeping in mind practicality (Can they sit in it? Is it too heavy? How will they attach the items?)
Describe: Using vivid adjectives and thoughtful details, students write about their inspiration and the meaning behind their chosen theme.
Prepare: Their written descriptions are then recorded to become the soundtrack for the big show!
More than just a fun fashion event, Project Runway ties into third grade’s essential question: "How do your experiences shape who you are?" Each outfit is a reflection of the student’s personality, interests, and creativity—making the show not just a spectacle, but a celebration of self-expression.
"Project Runway is great because not only are we getting to know the kids better through their projects and building community, but it also gives them public speaking experience," said Katie Bruno Third Grade Homeroom Teacher. "As they record their audio descriptions, they get the chance to work on their expression and cadence as they speak into the microphone with Mrs. Garvey [Lower School Technology, Innovation, and Design Integrator]."
As we countdown to the 100th day, we can’t wait to see what this year’s designers bring to the runway. Stay tuned!
