Seventh Graders Begin Harkness-Style Discussions in English

In seventh-grade English classes, students began using the Harkness Method for tabletop discussions of Night by Elie Wiesel.

The Harkness Method seats students in an oval configuration (ensuring everybody can make eye contact with each speaker), and fosters student-led discussion with minimal teacher involvement.  Students begin by asking thought-provoking questions related to their current subject matter, and are expected to listen and contribute with open minds, active listening skills, respect, and reflection.

Seventh graders begin to practice Harkness in English, math, and history classes so they are ready to fully engage in this method of discussion in eighth grade.

“Harkness discussions help flex skills essential for success in future classes and in life,” said English Teacher Megan Boyle. “Whether you are discussing literature, current events, or how to work through a problem with others, it is important to know how to respectfully make your voice heard, listen carefully to the responses of your peers, and synthesize information as a team to discover new meaning and ideas."
