Second Graders Reflect on their “Best Gift Ever”

Second Graders Reflect on their “Best Gift Ever”

Just in time for the holiday season, Peck’s second graders explored the meaning of non-material gifts through a heartwarming literacy activity inspired by The Gift of Nothing by Patrick McDonnell. In the story, a character searches for the perfect present—only to realize that the most meaningful gifts aren’t objects at all, but moments shared with the people we love.

After reading and discussing the book, students were challenged to write about the best gift they’ve ever received—without choosing anything physical or store-bought. Their reflections touched on experiences like time spent with family, special moments with friends, and acts of kindness that left a lasting impression.

“This activity helps students recognize that the most meaningful gifts are the moments and people who make them feel loved,” said Second Grade Homeroom Teacher Erin Ceder. “It’s a beautiful way for them to slow down, reflect, and appreciate what truly matters during the holiday season.”

The activity encouraged students to think deeply about gratitude, togetherness, and the joy that comes from simple, meaningful connections. As the holidays approach, second graders are carrying forward an important reminder: the best gifts are the ones money can’t buy.
