The Peck School's second graders began the new year by weaving a literal and symbolic web that underscored the importance of connection, community, and shared responsibility.
During a morning meeting activity, students stood in a circle and shared resolutions specific to their classroom. As each voiced their commitment—whether it was to be a better listener, help a friend, or show kindness—they passed a spool of string to the next person. As the web took shape, the students saw how each commitment contributed to the group's strength and unity.
This visual and hands-on exercise demonstrated the power of their collective actions. The students learned that if one person didn’t hold up their piece of string—representing their resolution—the entire web could collapse. It served as a powerful reminder that every decision they make and every action they take impacts the group as a whole.
“This activity reflects the school’s message of Rising by Lifting Others,” said Second Grade Homeroom Teacher Jane Attah. The students had a visual representation of what each strand of the web represented their individual commitments, but together, it showed the strength and interconnectedness of their classroom community.”
With this thoughtful activity, the second graders didn’t just make resolutions—they wove a community, showing that rising together is the strongest way forward into the new year.
