Peck’s Kindergarten and First Graders Get a Visit From Morristown Firefighters for Fire Safety Week

This week, kindergarteners and first graders at Peck were treated to an exciting and educational visit from Morristown firefighters in honor of Fire Safety Week. With their bright red fire truck parked outside, the firefighters shared essential tips on fire prevention, home safety, and what to do in case of an emergency, tying in perfectly with the first-grade curriculum’s essential question: what makes a community?

Students had the opportunity to explore the fire truck up close, climb into the driver’s seat, and ask questions about their daily lives as community heroes. The highlight of the visit was watching one firefighter suit up in full gear, reassuring students that firefighters are there to help—even if they look a little different in their protective clothing. The visit sparked curiosity and lots of questions from our youngest students.

“It is important for students to see first responders in non-emergency situations so that they are easily recognizable as someone who is there to help. Becoming familiar with what a firefighter looks like in full gear in a school setting could save a life in the event of a true emergency,” said First Grade Homeroom Teacher Christa Nees. “The Morristown Fire Department did a great job of educating students on fire safety in an engaging and interactive way.”

By the end of the session, Peck’s youngest students were buzzing with excitement and left with newfound knowledge about staying safe in their homes and what to do in case of an emergency.
