Peck’s Fourth Grade Sets Sail on the Hudson River

The fourth-grade class at The Peck School recently embarked on their annual experiential learning adventure, sailing the Hudson River aboard the 106-foot sloop named Clearwater. The hands-on experience transformed the river into a floating classroom, giving students the opportunity to learn through direct observation and exploration.

Throughout the voyage, students worked alongside the crew to hoist sails, steer the vessel, and learn the fundamentals of sailing. They also explored the ecology of the Hudson River, examined water quality, and discussed the importance of environmental stewardship. The experience fostered collaboration, communication, and problem-solving while helping students develop a deeper connection to the natural world around them.

“The trip gives students a chance to learn outside the classroom in a truly meaningful way,” said Fourth Grade Teacher Lynn Tecza. “By working together to sail the schooner and investigate the Hudson River ecosystem, students gain a greater appreciation for teamwork, responsibility, and the environment.”
