More Than Cozy Comfort: Pajama Day in the K Brings Warmth and Meaning

At The Peck School, the kindergarten’s Pajama Day is more than a fun excuse to wear comfy clothes to class—it’s a heartwarming tradition that combines community, learning, and giving back.

Held annually, Pajama Day is the exciting finale to kindergarten's study of how animals survive cold weather—through hibernation, migration, or unique adaptations.

“Pajama Day is a fun, interactive way for students to connect with the concept of warmth,” says Kindergarten Teacher Kristin Young. “For example, we talk about how foxes use their bushy tails to keep warm, and we use scarves. Or how a lynx’s fur-covered paws act like natural mittens. And of course, pajamas help us stay cozy and warm as we sleep.”

The kindergarten also holds a pajama drive to support The Pajama Program—a national 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing equitable access to healthy sleep for children. By donating pajamas, Peck's youngest students contribute to creating a foundation of safety and comfort for kids across the country.  This year students collected 70 pajamas to donate.

Pajama Day doesn’t just stay in the kindergarten, however. The real magic happens when the kindergartners team up with their fourth-grade buddies for a morning of connection and fun!

Dressed in their coziest pajamas, the students gather in the kindergarten classroom to read their favorite stories together and sip hot cocoa during recess. The tradition not only reinforces the importance of community service but also highlights the joy of bonding across grades—an essential part of Peck’s K-8 environment.

The day weaves together learning, giving, and connection, making it a learning experience that embodies several of Peck’s core values. By combining hands-on lessons about nature, meaningful acts of service, and joyful moments with their fourth-grade buddies, the kindergarteners experience the true warmth of community—both inside and outside the classroom. It’s a day that leaves everyone feeling cozy, cared for, and connected.
