The Upper School recently hosted two extraordinary Peck parents who came to share their enriching experiences as women in STEM fields. Their insights not only shed light on their respective professions but also served as invaluable guidance for our students contemplating their own career paths.
Sarah Heck: Connecting the World Wirelessly
Sarah Heck P’26 captivated the audience with her fascinating journey in the wireless sector. She illuminated the ubiquity of wireless technologies in our daily lives, from the smartphones we use to the wifi networks we rely on, and even the satellites orbiting high above us. But what truly captured everyone's attention was her recounting of a pivotal moment in her career. Heck shared how her collaboration with the NYPD led to the apprehension of the suspect behind the 2010 Times Square car bombing attempt, using security camera footage that relied on her technologies to capture high-quality images.
Despite not being a standout student during her own K-8 years, Heck emphasized the importance of perseverance and hard work. "My passion for math and science didn't blossom until college," she shared candidly. "But with determination and effort, I found my path. Remember, it's never too late to discover your calling."
Dr. Lillian Aldaia: The Heart of the Matter
Dr. Lillian Aldaia, a general cardiologist, took the stage next, providing an in-depth exploration of the human heart. With the help of visual aids and even an impromptu echocardiogram demonstration, she explained the various imaging techniques used to study the heart's functions. Her interactive session gave students a glimpse into the fascinating world of cardiology.
During the Q&A session, a student posed a question about the challenges Aldaia faced as a woman in her field. With unwavering confidence, she responded, "Hard work and dedication are essential in any profession. I was once told that pursuing a career in medicine would consume my entire life. But I'm living proof that you can balance a rewarding career in cardiology with a fulfilling personal life."
Empowering the Future
"I aspire to be a pediatrician one day, combining my love for science and kids. Both of the presenters were inspirational, and I even got to stay after it was over to see Dr. Aldaia demonstrate how the ultrasound machine worked on her own heart. This presentation only further solidified my future goals for me," said Angelina S. '24.
The presentations by Heck and Aldaia served as powerful reminders that passion, perseverance, and resilience are key ingredients for success in any field, especially in STEM. Their stories resonated with our students, inspiring them to pursue their dreams fearlessly and embrace the challenges that lie ahead.
