Estimation Station: Redefining Lucky Guesses

Estimation Station: Redefining Lucky Guesses

In the realm of education, innovation is the key to unlocking students' potential and making learning enjoyable.

Director of Lower School Math Sophie Brady has implemented a new innovative concept that combines education and entertainment in both our Lower School and Kindergarten buildings with the "Estimation Station."

This ongoing math activity engages students in a hands-on, interactive way to sharpen their estimation skills while making learning fun. The Estimation Station consists of a jar filled with seasonal trinkets (plastic spider rings for October), and ballots for students to cast their best guesses as to how many items live in the jar with hopes of being the most accurate guesser. The student with the closest estimate will then be announced at the Lower School Assembly at the end of the month, and awarded a much-anticipated Downy/Redhead ticket.

“The Estimation Station has been a successful tool in creating excitement around math,” says Brady. “Estimation is a great way to develop young students’ sense of quantity. As these monthly contests continue, students will be able to refine their estimation skills and learn new strategies that will help them attain more accurate guesses.”
