Eighth Graders Spin Back in Time with Vinyl in Upper School Music

In Upper School Music, eighth graders recently took a step back in time as they explored the nostalgic world of vinyl records. Upper School Music Teacher Sebastian Guerrero introduced students to the mechanics behind vinyl and record players, explaining how sound is captured in grooves and brought to life through a needle and turntable.

To kick off the listening session, Guerrero put on Sugarhill Gang by The Sugarhill Gang, filling the room with the unmistakable energy of early hip-hop. By popular demand, he followed it with a classic pop favorite—Cyndi Lauper—giving students a taste of two iconic eras of sound.

“It sounds like they’re in the room with us,” said Zander P. ’26, listening closely.

“And that,” Guerrero added with a smile, “is exactly why vinyls and record players will never go away.”

The lesson offered students a unique blend of music history, technology, and appreciation—proving that even in a digital age, some classics truly stand the test of time.
