In September, former Athletic Director Don Diebold returned to Peck to address the Upper School students, offering valuable life lessons drawn from his years of experience in athletics and leadership. Diebold, Peck’s Athletic Director from 1995-2017, spoke passionately about the core values that define success—not just as athletes, but as individuals.
Current Athletic Director Scott Dobbs, who continues to build on the strong foundation laid by Diebold, also emphasized how these principles remain at the heart of Peck’s athletic program today.
“Coach Diebold has a gift, not only for bringing out the best in everyone he encounters, but for teaching the invaluable life lessons sports provide, especially at Peck. Our community is so fortunate that he continues, just as he has for four decades, to share these gifts generously,” Dobbs said of his visit.
During his talk, Diebold emphasized three key aspects that every Peck athlete can control: their attitude, their efforts, and their care for both teammates and opponents. He explained that while the outcome of a game or the actions of others may be unpredictable, each individual has the power to shape their response.
By maintaining a positive attitude, giving their best effort, and showing compassion and respect for others, students can embody the true spirit of sportsmanship.
Dobbs then spoke about the importance of legacy and how each person has control over how they are remembered. He challenged the students to consider what kind of lasting impact they want to leave behind, whether in sports, school, or life. He urged them to take pride in the choices they make each day—choices that collectively define their reputation and character.
By focusing on these elements, Coaches Diebold's and Dobbs’ messages were clear: it’s not just about winning or losing, but about the mark you leave on others and how you carry yourself both on and off the field. Coach Diebold’s words resonated with the Upper School students, reminding them that they have the power to shape their legacy through their actions and their commitment to themselves and their community.
