A Day of Discovery: Peck Third Graders Take Charge at Liberty Science Center

The Peck School’s third graders embarked on an exciting adventure recently as they visited the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City.

Connecting the trip to concepts learned in science classes, the students got hands-on demonstrations of various scientific principles, including physics experiments with motion and gravity, interactive exhibits on biology and ecosystems, and engaging demonstrations on chemistry concepts like reactions and states of matter.

The third graders were divided into small groups, each accompanied by a chaperone, and demonstrated exceptional teamwork as they navigated through the various exhibits including the Infinity Climber and Microbes Rule! However, the undisputed highlight of the trip was the Touch Tunnel exhibit. This interactive experience resonated particularly well with the students, complementing their ongoing exploration of the five senses and enhancing their understanding of how these senses play a crucial role in their developing writing skills.

“A big goal we have for our third graders is to integrate more independent learning amongst students. This field trip is a good challenge for third graders as they transition into a space of more responsibility, and gives them opportunities to take their learning experience into their own hands,” said Associate Teacher JT McMillen.
