Responsible Student Use & Academic Integrity

Clear expectations help students understand that responsible AI use depends on permission, purpose, and transparency.

  • Teacher Direction: Students may use AI only when a teacher has given permission and established how it may be used for the assignment.

  • Approved Environments: Student use is limited to school-approved tools (such as FlintK12 or Canva) that have been evaluated for age appropriateness, educational value, privacy, and security.

  • Purposeful Use: When permitted, AI may support specific parts of the learning process, such as practicing a skill, considering another perspective, or evaluating the accuracy and bias of an AI-generated response. When students use generative AI to brainstorm or develop ideas, they begin with their own thinking, use AI for assistance where appropriate, and evaluate its output before deciding what to use.

  • Authentic Work: Students remain responsible for their ideas, decisions, and final work, including the accuracy and appropriateness of any AI-assisted content. They should be able to explain their thinking, describe how AI contributed, and acknowledge or cite its use when required.

  • Consideration of Others: Students may not use AI in ways that compromise another person’s identity, privacy, safety, dignity, or intellectual property.

  • Student Data Protection: When students engage directly with AI, they do so through school-approved tools selected not only to protect their privacy, but also keep their information and work from contributing to the training of public AI models.
