Gr. 5 Mixtures and Solutions

Exclamations of “Ramen! Soup!” and more may have you thinking that you had walked into the dining hall, but there was a distinct lack of food in Ms. Roth’s fifth-grade science classroom.
A smattering of notebooks and papers was on each student’s desk, and engaged fifth graders were learning about mixtures and solutions! This is an exciting science unit, as students are able to draw from their own experiences and apply them within the classroom. Mixtures are typically substances that are not completely dissolved, like ramen. Solutions are substances that are dissolved completely and cannot be filtered out, such as tea or a broth. Fifth graders will be participating in a lab in the upcoming weeks identifying mystery substances based on chemical reactions. Later, they will apply their knowledge to create their own bath bombs!
