Why Private School? A Teacher’s Perspective From Both Sides of the Desk

Why Private School? A Teacher’s Perspective From Both Sides of the Desk

As someone who’s taught in public, charter, and private schools, I’m often asked the same question: Why private school? It’s a great question—and one I love to answer.

Each school environment brings something valuable to the table, but now that I’m teaching at The Peck School, an independent K–8 school, I’ve seen firsthand how private schools can offer a truly distinctive educational experience. It’s not just about small class sizes or rigorous academics—it’s about the culture of growth, connection, and leadership that’s built into every part of the school day.

What Makes the Experience Different

Here are just a few of the reasons why I believe private school—especially at a place like Peck—can be so impactful for a child’s development.

Leadership Isn’t Reserved for Later

In many traditional public school settings, leadership roles are often reserved for older students—fifth grade patrols, high school student councils, and so on. At Peck, leadership opportunities begin right away, in age-appropriate ways that grow with each child.

Whether it’s fourth graders mentoring kindergarten “buddies” or eighth graders delivering speeches in front of the entire school community, students learn to lead with empathy, confidence, and integrity—something I didn’t often see in public schools, simply because the structure didn’t always allow for it.

Public Speaking Becomes Second Nature

Communication and public speaking are deeply woven into life at Peck. Every student has the chance to step into the spotlight, from class presentations to the much-anticipated eighth-grade speeches.

When I taught in public school, many students didn’t have the same structured opportunities to speak in front of others. At Peck, it’s simply part of the culture—and it makes a real difference in confidence, self-expression, and poise.

Family-Style Dining Builds Community

One of the most unique—and heartwarming—aspects of life at Peck is our daily family-style dining experience. Students from different grade levels sit together at round tables with an adult, sharing meals, conversation, and responsibility.

Passing plates, pouring water, and cleaning up together fosters connection across grades and helps children develop respect, responsibility, and social awareness in a natural, joyful way—something I hadn’t experienced in other school settings.

A Culture of Care and Connection

What truly sets Peck apart is its intentional focus on the whole child. Learning here isn’t just about academics—it’s about building good people.

From Morning Meetings to service learning projects, everything is rooted in kindness, empathy, and the belief that children thrive when they are truly known and valued.

So, Why Private School?

For me, the answer is simple: private school—especially a place like Peck—offers a personalized, connected, and leadership-focused experience that helps students grow into confident, capable, and compassionate individuals. Having taught across multiple school systems, I’ve seen what works—and I can say with confidence that this works beautifully.
