5 Things to Know About the Independent School Admissions Process

5 Things to Know About the Independent School Admissions Process
Kim Clary, Director of Admissions & Financial Aid

As the Admissions Director at The Peck School, I know that choosing the right educational path for your child is a meaningful—and sometimes overwhelming—decision. The independent school admissions process can feel complex at first, but it doesn’t have to be intimidating.

My goal is to help families feel informed, supported, and confident as they navigate the process. Below are five important things every family should know when considering independent school admissions.

What Families Should Know Before Applying

These key considerations can help families approach the admissions process with clarity, confidence, and perspective.

1. Start Early, Stay Informed

Our admissions season kicks off early for a reason. Starting the process early allows both you and the school to thoroughly assess compatibility. Stay informed about application deadlines, required documents, and admission events. Attend open houses and school tours to get a feel for our community and programs.

2. Take A Holistic Approach to Admissions

At Peck, we take a holistic approach to admissions, considering not just academic achievements, but also character, special interests, and potential contributions to the school community. A well-rounded applicant stands out in our selection process.

3. Explore Tuition Assistance Opportunities

Don't let financial concerns hinder your decision to apply. Many independent schools, including ours, offer financial aid programs. Start the tuition assistance application process early. We believe in creating a diverse and inclusive community, and tuition assistance is a crucial aspect of achieving this goal.

4. Understand the School's Philosophy

Every independent school has a unique educational philosophy. Take the time to understand our values, teaching methods, and overall mission. At Peck, we believe that the development of a strong moral foundation is just as important as a strong academic one. Ensure that our values align with your family's educational goals and principles. Knowing what makes our school special helps you make an informed decision that benefits both you and your child.

5. Know When To Apply: Optimal Entry Points

While you can apply your child to enter at any grade level, at Peck there are two optimal entry points: kindergarten and fifth grade. If you are even remotely considering applying to Peck, consult with us about when might be best to apply for your child. This will allow you to plan ahead and complete the application process on time.
