The Arts
Woodworking

The scent of fresh cut lumber, the tactile experience of working with wood, and the great satisfaction of having created something with ones own hands; this is why children so enjoy each half-year they spend in Upper School woodshop classes. Safety remains the foundation of the program; all students continue to review annually safe habits before working in the woodshop.

Soon after fifth graders are given a scale drawing outlining project details; they are able to recognize views, understand scale, and read dimensions. Additional training in the use of hand tools is provided. Sixth grade is an especially exciting year; students receive their first instruction in the safe operation of specific power equipment that they will use to craft their projects.

Carving and shaping make each seventh grade woodworking endeavor unique. Eighth graders select and build their own "senior project" that challenges each student's woodworking skills.
