The Arts
Music

Whether singing a medieval canon or composing music using a MIDI-interfaced laptop computer and piano keyboard, Peck's Upper School students experience music through the centuries.

Peck's fifth graders continue to play the recorder and are introduced to the keyboard. The computer software program Music Ace helps fifth grade students build music reading skills through self-guided lessons and games, while Sibelius Instruments, an interactive encyclopedia, aids in learning about instruments, bands and orchestras. Sixth graders further develop skills at the keyboard, playing melodies and creating accompaniments. Auralia software guides students' rhythmic and melodic ear training.

Seventh grade students are exposed to music with Asian and Latin flares and are introduced to sequencing and notation using various computer programs. Eighth graders sing and learn the history of songs of the Revolutionary War, Negro spirituals, and Civil Rights protest songs.

All Upper School students perform at the Christmas Sing and Spring Sing. Those students expressing interest may join the Upper School Chorus which participates in the annual spring choral competition, Music in the Parks Festival.
