The Arts
Music

From a kindergartener's first simple xylophone accompaniment to a fourth grader's performance in a class ensemble of soprano and alto recorders, xylophones, glockenspiels, and handchimes, lower school students live a life of music through singing, playing instruments, listening, creating and reading simple music.

Elementary concepts of beat, rhythm, loud & soft, high & low, and fast & slow are introduced in kindergarten. This foundation of principles is built upon in first grade as children learn how to read and write music on the staff. Second graders look forward to their introduction to hand chimes and third graders, to the recorder. As part of a cross-curricular arts/history unit of study, fourth graders sing and learn the origins of folksongs.

Hand Bells

All lower school students perform in assemblies and at the Christmas Sing and Spring Sing. Musicals provide opportunities to all for dramatic and vocal performances. Second, third and fourth graders are encouraged to participate in the Lower School Chorus which performs in school and in the local community.
